laliandra: (in~your~endo)
Hey you guys! I have a googledoc open where I am writing up various terrible stories from my life (yes, including how I accidentally flashed a bunch of people at a wedding) because my existence is sprinkled with stories that make me sound like a sitcom character. So if you have any requests, speak now.

Also I should not be allowed to write fic on tumblr. Someone remind me of this.

Anyway, I got memes! From the incomparable [ profile] antistar_e

1. Reply to this post with "MEME IS NOT A DIRTY WORD" and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Heh most of these end with ALSO PRETTY *shallowest* )

Meme Two! This one has feeeeeelings.

Reply with "and while we're at it, NEITHER IS SQUEE" and I'll give you four fandoms.
Write about your favorite character from each fandom.

And fandoms! Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Social Network, and Merlin.

So many feels and also indecision )
laliandra: (strawberries)
It's always amusing to me how differently the world looks from where I'm sitting.

Me: OH GOD, now that I've spammed everyone with my The Social Network Big Bang by posting all the entries and posting to comms and talking about it on Twitter, they probably hate me.
A significant portion of my twitter/flist: WAIT YOU POSTED YOUR BIG BANG?

So, yes, yes I did post my conpeople AU, in which our hero learns the importance of love, time, using your damn words and proper lumbar support. And in case you missed me editing it in, novembersmith made the most amazing mix called Love Songs for the Criminally Unaware and I have been listening to it on repeat for days. Interspersed with this. Now that the serious side has been taken care of (SO PERFECTLY I CANNOT EVEN) I can get on with Earnest Mix of Seduction and Post Break Up Terrible Karaoke playlists *g*. Also I'm pretty sure I owe a fair few of you mixtapes; let me know?

Baby's first Big Bang! It was supreme amounts of fun, even if it did mean that I stayed up until past five three nights in a row, once for Moog's big bang, once for mine and once just because when given an IRL moogle62 I cannot stop talking. I loved getting art and being part of something and I think I'm proud of the story, I'm still too close to it right now, and all I can think about is all the things I didn't end up putting in it. But the whole BB has been of a sort of stunning quality. What are you, TSN fandom?

This is the first time in two years that I haven't had a deadline or an active WIP. I am confused by this state of affairs. Obviously all my brain can think of doing now is some sort of timestamp meme.

Out of fandom lifewise, well, hmm, things remain... stagnant. My boyfriend bought a new car which promptly broke down so that was. Yeah. Been better!

My family remain my family:

Me: Oh hey Dad, how are things in South Africa?
Dad: Your grandmother is mad at me because I set the lawn on fire while she was here.
Me: ... HOW?
Dad: I threw a firecracker at a monkey.
Me: Obviously.

And then we had a twenty minute conversation about the Italian national anthem. I swear I'm not making this up.

When I'm not talking Verdi, I mostly spend my days hanging out on tumblr and getting into email loops. Should you wish some quality correspondence, I can be found at muchadoaboutcogs on the gmail.

Aaaand finally, this meme went around a while ago but I never got round to posting it and I'm kind of intrigued. Like I said, I need to see the world from where I'm not sitting!

"If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach." -- Alfred Hitchcock

If I wrote a story today, what would the readers immediately look for?

That was a pretty nice wrap up, there, don't you think? How are you, lovely flist?
laliandra: (youramericanidol)
The universe has apparently decided to punish me for actually having things to do by making me ill at the most inconvinient time. I start my new job tomorrow! I have SO MANY THINGS TO WRITE, oh man. And I just want to curl up in a ball and sleep forever, or at least until I stop feeling achey and naseous and that things like "other people" and "clothes" are overwhelming and complex.
But oh well! I have some pictures and things to share with you and a meme! You know I love memes.
My lovely ex-housemate Elliot is staying with us at the moment while he is between houses. It's great because he loves to cook! And he brought a bread-maker, which I have been dorkishly excited about. We've made many types of bread, as well as pizza dough and tea cakes. BAKING \o/
I also made cupcakes solely so that I could try out the fancy new icing kit that my Dad sent me. I will freely admit to essentially being SweetOnYou!Wardo. I'm okay with that.

In SPAU news, I am nearly done with editing the final part \o/ I recently dug out the post-it summery system I used to plot out the whole sprawling mess, and somehow the last chapter translated from 3 notes into 10,000 words. No idea how that happened! Anyway, I thought I would share them with you, it's not spoilery - far too vague, especially as one of the notes just says, "THE END" and we all knew that was coming, right?
And for the last few days my other lovely ex-housemate, Belle, has been staying. I haven't seen for nearly 6 months, which has been horrible. She's been in Peru teaching, and she brought me back many things with llamas on. Hurrah! She's starting teacher training tomorrow, and the program she's on sounds more and more like a cult every time she mentions it.
Belle: We had to vote for a song of the 2011 cohort. And they are going to play it at every morning meeting.
Me: Oh god.
Belle: I'm there for 6 weeks.
Me: Oh GOD.
Belle: And I think we have to chant the mission statement.
Me: Should we start creating code words in case you need us to come break you out?
We had day out in Knaresborough, historical market town. I was mostly just excited about the bubblegum ice cream.
You also get to see my attempt to paint a tiny tie onto my nail, which was [ profile] mcollinknight 's suggestion after I was discussing painting my nails Dalton Academy colours for the Darren Criss concert that I'm going to with [ profile] altogetherisi (!!!!!)
I should return back to edits and also to trying to get my stupid TSNBB underway *clings to [ profile] novembersmith and [ profile] moogle62 * Quite how I conned my way into getting two such wonderful writing buddies I will never know... We are all in the same crazy boat of having decided, for reasons known only to our brains, of writing plotty AUs. TEAMTSNBB: WE ARE ALL INSANE.
But first, a meme from [ profile] mistresscurvy

1. So TENNIS. What are your feelings? Who are your players? Thoughts on Murray's chances of breaking the curse?
Wimbledon! The thing you have to know about me and sport is that I am astonishingly poor at it, but love to watch other people play it. Tennis is so fascinating to me because it's such a strange mix of intimate, one-on-one psychological battling and pure athleticism. And everyone who plays is so different! There is no right way to tennis. There are plenty of wrong ways, mind, as I know all too well. Anyway, I don't have many players that I always support .I tend to cheer for the English and French players, but apart from that I like a good story. It takes one nicely put together package, one fight back from the brink or hilarious reaction and I am THERE. I get very invested very quickly, what can I say? I have a special fondness for Wimbledon because it reminds me of summer, and of my Mum's out of control crush on Andre Agassi. And it's so marvellously English and lovely.
2. What does your boyfriend think about all of your crazy fandom shenanigans?
Ahahaha, oh man. I sometimes think I'm going to write an essay about fandom and it will start - "my boyfriend doesn't understand fandom".  Which is not entirely true, but basically, he is pretty much a constantly cycling mix of amused, supportive and completely baffled. He understands some parts of fandom, I think, but not really how it actually functions. He is constantly suprised that we are, in essence, a society that functions without currency. He's always asking where the money for things comes from, why people are doing things if they're not getting paid. The idea that [ profile] brimtoast has beta'd my 50k plus story for nothing but love blows his mind.  It's sort of hard to explain to someone, because it lacks a decent comparison. He is a dork in many ways, so he understands being a fan of something, but that's not everything that I mean when I say I'm from fandom, you know? It's so much more than that, sometimes I think defining oneself as being from fandom says more about your values and thought processes than something like your nationality does. Anyway, he's pretty supportive of my crazy writing habits, because I am a cliche writer and sometimes get lost in my own imagination. And now that he's met some of my fandom friends he seems to have been convinced that yes, we are actually real, proper, I love and value these people beyond measure friends. I mean, he still refers to y'all as my "crazy internet friends" but that is through observation, not through prejudice against friends made online. Okay, wow, this has turned into kind of an essay. He still calls the internet my other boyfriend a lot :D

3. What was your first fandom? Do you miss it?
It was Harry Potter! No surprises there, I think it's the same story for a lot of people my age or thereabouts. It's the gateway drug of fandom! And I do miss it sometimes, but I've kept the vast majority of the friends I made there, and I still get to be a super Potterhead a lot. It's not my main fandom in that I don't write in it anymore, really, but it's my forever fandom. I was massively excited about Pottermore! I love that there is still so much always to say and think about the series. I've just realised that I don't think I have anyone nearby to see the last movie with when it comes out, because all of my geeky friends are too far away or on holiday at the time. Woe. Harry Potter, I will never be over yoooooou.

4. If you could be anyone else in the world for one day, who would you choose and why?
Ooo, this is an awesome question! It's so tempting to say someone powerful but I'd probably just like to be rich and do lots of exciting things. I could be someone from fandom so that I could check on our canon. So tempted to say Mark Zuckerburg. Because being a politician wouldn't actually mean you could change the world in a day, but if you were 1. a billionaire and 2. in charge of Facebook...

5. Do you have siblings? If so are you close to him/her/them?
I don't! I am an only child. Make snap judgements about them at your peril.

If you want to play the questions game, ask and you shall receive. The number of the questions shall be five...
laliandra: (sprinkles)
I know I only posted yesterday but I hear that leaving it weeks between LJ posts is not actually mandatory. Who knew?!

I, er, have been tempted into doing this.

Things are, well, I'm not going to sob story or guilt you into saying something there, but Not Great pretty much sums it up. My thread lives HERE. This is a first for anything like this for me!

I've been listening in an usually obsessive way to a bunch of fanmixes and mixtapes (I say mixtapes, they're mostly CDs or downloaded folders because this is the modern way) recently, and I've been thinking about how much I love mixes. Music is such a big part of everything I do and am, plus I live with a music obsessive. You know, the type who owns a record player *g*. So, I thought I'd offer mixes. Do you want me to make you a mix? Any kind of theme you like, any stupid thing, happy songs or songs for summer or songs with sad lyrics and happy melodies or ANY OLD THING. We have a lot of music in this house. You can tell me the kind of music you do/don't like if you want or live dangerous. I like to share *busts those only child stereotypes*

Just leave a request in comments!

And finally! I went to see Attack The Block today and it was awesome! I am not sure how to describe it - apart from chavs versus aliens which is sort of accurate but sort of not - but it was a really great movie, funny and sharp and just the right side of scary. Which for me is "sometimes suspenseful but mostly not too traumatic". I am bad with horror movies. Anyway, I think you should all go see it because it's a strangely beautiful film, for all that it's set on a council estate in Shouth London, and has a weirdly positive message. Plus it was written and directed by a guy called Joe Cornish who is one of those fanboy-made-it-big types. He's one of us!
laliandra: (aspiration)

I was trying to sum it up the other day for Kara, actually, and what I ended up saying was this. The highs were very high, but the lows were really, really low. And in between them there were vast periods that felt like an exercise in survival. If I can just make to the end of the month, make it to the weekend, through this one time. So, yeah. I moved in with my boyfriend and I lost my job. I started writing again in a fandom I love and I was so poor I walked for an hour across town with half of my possessions because I couldn't afford the bus. I got to spend a movie montage perfect week with my best friend and I had to sit helpless on the other side of world while someone I loved was hurting.

I enjoyed all of your company for 2010, and I love you all so much. I have really great memories of 2010 thanks to you, and I hope we get to make many, many more.

In the spirit of the thing, here are some memes! That I totally stole from [ profile] mcollinknight (sorry about the sprinkles!)

First sentences of 2010:

January: Happy 2010! I had a most excellent New Year's Eve. It involved homemade hats and glitter glue, chocolate fondue, champagne cocktails from the roaring twenties, Nat making friends with a baby, much Inappropriateness and Innuendo("Is Ivy's flange warm?") and The Hat Game, Scattergories and The Humming Game.
February: I went to South Africa and as promised, bring back tales of Adventure. And I even managed not to cause any kind of international crisis (aren't you proud of me [ profile] mathsnerd ?), though not through lack of trying...
March:  I have been distracted by work (which, that's a whoe other post) and going to the ballet (<3) and not being able to shake this damn cough (When you sound like Satine at the end of Moulin Rouge, it's never a good sign) and doing edits and then Word losing 13 pages of them (*shakes fist*). Huh, actually, when I put it all down, it's been more than a bit of a week. But life goes on, and so must this meme.
April: So! I am 23. It feels much as 22, only less symmetrical.
May: Hey you guys! Not dead, or time travelling. Just faily.
So I have been woefully sick for the last few days. It has been most unpleasant and I have been living in a cave of pillows and listening to this weekend's cricket commentary and tennis. The sound of other people excelling at sport is soothing to me!
Still not dead!
So, I have this temping job and it's kind of soul crushingly, brain atrophyingly dull
Currently, I spend a deal of time sitting on trains marvelling at the weather and so, as I told twitter, I want to write all the sunshine filled stories in the world. Colline instructed me to write and I can't really say no to her charming Canadian vowels.
I keep thinking about making a real, honest to God post. I am also thinking about some sort of Intro/Masterlist post thing because, hi new people! I'm still trying to work out what people need to know about me. Suggestions?
November: Oh, god, I haven't posted in forever and a day. Or, like, three weeks but whatever. The internet moves at the speed of light and all.
December: This weekend Nat and I went to that there Londontown to catch up with old friends aplenty. There was a concerning few days midweek when the snow got so bad that I got sent home from work and sat in the car with a co-worker (my favourite co-worker and not just because she agreed to drive me most of the way home) and we couldn't see anything beyond the front of the car bonnet. Which was a little alarming, to say the least!

2 more memes under the cut! )

30. One wish for '11?: Success, Batman and shininess for all
laliandra: (write)
Okay, so the posting more thing. That went well! The thing is, I have realised that I only tend to blog when I'm happy, and things have not been great, recently. I got made redundent and I had a series of days whee all I could think was "why do such bad thing happen to such good people?". So, yes. But, I am feeling more positive and thus more like blogging. And you know what this means, a meme! A lovely meme about writing, gakked from [ profile] rickey_a . This also seems a good moment to point you in the direction of my Author's page at the Archive of Our Own, which I am slowly but surely filling with nice, cleaned up versions of my fic. All handily stored in one place! For (HINTNUDGEHINT) ease of reading and commenting.

I am also declaring this post a "Ask Me About Writing" post. Just in case you had a question you wanted to ask me about anything I have ever written, or in general about being the horrible cliché of a writer that I am...

I was going to call this Inside My Mind but I thought it might actually put people off )
laliandra: (evita!)
I swear, I've been trying to upload these pictures everyday for ever. Ok, I may be exaggerating. But that's what it feels like. It's been a bit of a week, to be honest.

I have been distracted by work (which, that's a whoe other post) and going to the ballet (<3) and not being able to shake this damn cough (When you sound like Satine at the end of Moulin Rouge, it's never a good sign) and doing edits and then Word losing 13 pages of them (*shakes fist*).

Huh, actually, when I put it all down, it's been more than a bit of a week. But life goes on, and so must this meme.

So, these are the things that y'all wanted to see! If you have ever sent me anything, keep your eyes peeled...
Books and Bling, under the cut... )

So, there we are. Worth the wait?!
laliandra: (redshoes)
Hey, my Mid-February Resolution (New Year's Resolutions are for punctual people) is to post more.

So, picture memes!

First, stolen from my dearest brain twin [ profile] mcollinknight - tell me five places in my home you'd like to see (ex. living room, place you feel most relaxed, cereal drawer), and I'll take pictures and post them.

Second, from my lovely b-boy.. The Pick Some Pictures From Your Hard-drive And Post Them Meme.
* NO CAPTIONS! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.

* The pics must ALREADY be on your hard drive - no Googling or Flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.

* You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. (But I will!)
It turns out I have a lot of pictures that ~speak to me in many different (OH SO DIFFERENT) ways ) Let us not discuss my rampant cheating at this meme, ok?
laliandra: (Faaaces)
So, I am now a working girl.

No, wait.

I am a Person with a job and a title and everything. It is European Relations Executive. Most people I know's reaction can be summed up as such

Anyway, SOME people were slightly less hysterically amused and decidedly more awesome. Like [ profile] kaiserkuchen , who drew me AN AWESOME PICTURE OF AWESOMENESS.

Srsly! )

!!! Hi Kris hi!

And by some fluke, she drew Kris sitting on an EXACT COPY OF MY CHAIR AT WORK. Look at his adorable PLAID TROUSERS AND EXPRESSION OF SRS BNS. This means I should add Sexy Librarian Kris AU to my List of Things To Write List*, right?!

You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when were they working THERE? Since when were they dating HIM/HER? Since when!?" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

If you like, copy the topics below, erase my answers and put yours in their place, and then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration. One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.

You guys feel free to ask for further explanation or anything you have ever wanted to know!

FIRST NAME: Lal! Well, not really. But really! I guess half of you know my real name by now, but I really love being Laliandra, it's so pretty.

AGE: 22. Mmm, symmetry.

LOCATION: In front of my laptop, my far too cold attic bedroom, my delightfully multicoloured house, my cobbled street, my city, The Frozen North, En-ger-land.

OCCUPATION: I actually have one of these now! I translate and write blurbs about perfume (it is hard to resist being passive aggressively bitchy about Paris Hilton's perfume) and put things in boxes and tell people where their stuff is (usually where it is supposed to be). I have to get up CRAZY early, and get the bus to work. But the people I work with are cool and put up with me saying things like "OMG Anderson Cooper's mother has her own perfume!" and "Oh damn, I shoulda used the subjunctive there. Want to know something cool about the subjunctive?"

PARTNER: Is a word I dislike. Unless you use it for Partner In Crime. I do have a boyfriend, who goes by the name of Nat round here, and we have been going out longer than we both like to admit. Luckily we are both really conflicted about being romantic! <s>He makes me smile</s>

KIDS: They're great! I genuinely like children and have the Gift when it comes to making babies smile. I used to be a children's party entertainer. But oh god, not for MANY years. I want to do a lot of unchild-friendly things first!

BROTHERS/SISTERS: Nope! Make sweeping only child statements AT YOUR PERIL.

PETS: Sadly not. I have had many over the years, but uni life is not for pets. Me and Sal very nearly bought a kitten last year. We really shouldn't be left alone with fluffy things...

@ My new job
@ Organising meet ups with various peoples
@ Planning going to see my Dad in South Africa and catching some sun and some Test Matches there, too.
@ My WIP/ Things to Write List**
@ Trying to get my bed mended (lame but important! It could fall apart under IN MY SLEEP)

PARENTS: My parents met at my Dad's birthday party. He was dressed as a chorister and my Mum thought he was gay (Drama student, you see). The next party was thrown my Granny (Dad's Mum) and was a tarts and vicars theme with a genuine priest and a genuine prostitute. Granny was the Madam. This should probably tell you all you need to know about my family. My Dad is tall and has distinguished grey streaks in his hair. He writes adverts for a living, or he does occasionally, mostly now he bums around South Africa. He is a great cook and a hopeless speller. He is obsessed with penguins. Both my parents had South African fathers and non SA mothers. My Mum was a bluecoat and when she was 20ish ran away to Spain to become a go-go dancer and when that didn't work out she sold her own blood to buy her ticket home. She used to leave me notes everywhere. She was madly in love with David Bowie and Stephen Fry. She worked in marketing, so I think about advertising more than is normal, I fear. She never forgave me for not growing one shoe size more so that she could steal my shoes like she stole my jackets. I stole right back, of course.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR CLOSEST FRIENDS? Well, like C, I think I have separate groups. I have the friends I went to school with (one of whom is getting MARRIED in less than a year!). They are mostly silly, darling, spectacularly geeky boys, apart from Cat and Lil. Who are still silly, darling and geeky, but also very foxy ladies. I've known them all a long time. We have History. We mostly keep in contact by phone and Facebook these days, but I'm still glad I have them.

Then I have my uni friends. Apart from a couple of people, they have all sadly upped sticks and moved South. Apart from Nat and Elliot, and I'm keeping a careful eye on them! Anyway, most of my unii friends are marvellous, smart, funny and girls. I lived with 3 amazing ladies while at uni, and I miss them so badly! I need people to watch Strictly Come Dancing with, talk literature with, discuss our invisible friends and Gaudi and Falafel, our imaginary goldfish, with... But I'm going to see them all in London soon!

And then I have you guys! I have my fabulous spammers, I have Kaz to text me 7 times in one hour about Adam Lambert. I have the Marmfish (seriously, people, MEETUP?!). I have the lovely C to drag into fandoms with me. I have my Campfire ladies, who are so marvellous I have no words. OHTEATHREE, OKAY? I have some dear friends who I chat with through the internet and I'm happier for it.

So, OMG, that got much longer than expected! As a reward, footly bits aka footnotes.

* The List - Lessons in cookery for TDL marmfish, Something Royal-y for Havemercy peeps, Love is Not a Zero Sum Game or Venn Diagrams are fun!, A Beginners Guide to Bromancing, Sexy Librarian AU ;), More Postcards from Nowhere, More NbNW.
** - WIPs - Kradam talk food, game shows and ninja-ness for Kaz, YULETIDE, SPAU,

Snippets and explanations given freely and with love to anyone who asks. You made it this far, you deserve a reward!

Like, Bulgaria or the new Harry Potter Movie or funtimes with my crazy family...

But not today!

And firstly, Graduation! It was actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be! My Dad, true to form, very nearly missed it by staying on the bus as it went right through town, which led to me, in full robed garb, standing on the steps of the university yelling "JUST GET OFF THE BUS" into my phone.

Speaking of robes. ROBES! Oh, my Bat Cape of Responsibility (copyright[ profile] mcollinknight ), I am not sure you were worth £20 an hour, but you were so very swishy. I swept about the place feeling very like Professor Snape. Or DDG Pansy. And I graduated in The Great Hall. It was awesome.

Obviously, I could not resist a bit of a swirl
Spinny, swoopy Lal! )

Also, I have

2. Got my hair cut, finally. It has come to something when a haircut is a luxury.
16. Cooked gammon with honey and mustard glaze.
28. Read 'Never Let Me Go' by Kazuo Ishiguro. I borrowed it from my friend who has been extremely sceptical and occasionally condescending about sci-fi and fantasy. She loves this book. This book is sci-fi. Just because it doesn't say so on the back cover, just because it uses words like "darkly skewed" and "re-imagining", does not make it anything but sci-fi! ARG. Okay, so, this has turned into a rant. The book is very good, beautifully written and heart-achingly, bleakly real
And the entire Rough Guide To Bulgaria. Which was also surprisingly interesting! And informed me for our trip to churches so I could make serious noises about Byzantian vs Thracian. *history dorks about the place*
61. didn't lose the keys to my old house once. It's a miracle!
76. C.V updated and given out to about a million companies. Sigh.
87. Taken lots of photos recently. Yay!

And I have more words, from Flame, my sunbeam.

Once I played a lost boy in a production of Peter Pan. There was a lot of fake mud involved. I hear also that it is a sexy, silly 80's vampire movie. I might go put it on Nat's LoveFilm list, actually. And by put on, I mean, highjack without his permission. Obviously.

2. NICK (or as we call him in my neck of the woods NICK YO MAMA! RYVES) Nick! The esteemed protagonist of The Demon's Lexicon. My dear, my lasagna (christened so by the chat, for he is hot and layered and saucy). I know that your opinions, Flame, run a little different to mine, so here is my take on our boy.

I tried to be vague but warning! Possible spoilers for TDL!

I loved Nick from the get-go, despite his dickishness, his coldness and complete inability to relate to anyone. I sort of... got him. Or so I thought. So whereas some people were relieved by the reasoning SRB gave him at the end, I felt almost like the Nick I thought I knew, wasn't. If you see what I mean. But I eventually reconciled Nick with, um, Nick, in my head and still love him, borderline sociopath that he is.

And I know that you thought that Nick was painted as No Good because of his ways of picking up girls and generally being a bit of a Rake and a Cad and Flirt (or getting by on his good looks) but to me that wasn't a way that SRB made him mad, bad and dangerous to know (which is kind of is, but it's totally not his fault, kay!) but a way that she highlighted that he couldn't really connect to people. What we saw of Lianan, for example, shows us that this is not uncommon, that sex and flirting is one of the few interactions that they can actually do. Nick can flirt, joke with people, but that's about it. He can only really connect with Alan on any other level. Which is more sad that rakish, or so I thought. My two cents pence, as it were.

He is still entirely at liberty to try and seduce secrets out of me any time he likes...

3. BOOBIES - I am, as the terrible fanfic cliché goes, a girl with curves in all the right places. Or something like that. My friends used to put me to good use by positioning me to attract the barman's attention. This was after they had realised that sending me to the bar by myself is a terrible idea because I get distracted by other things and forget to order drinks. I used to accuse them of letting me be, essentially, the only girl in their group for what they could use me to get. The only downside is that sometimes, the punchline of my zombie!tee gets hidden...

4. AWESOMESAUCE- I LOVE this word! I use the word awesome, way, way too much. I blame the internet! Acesicles is another excellent word, by the by. I think the intenet has seriously Americanised some of my language, although I still like to put all the extra vowels back into things. I also say 'like' far too much. Awesome.

5. ♥ okay, so that's not a word, but it kind of counts because it's a symbol of erm-- something (: - Hee! It is a symbol of love! Or <3. I less than three you...

Aaaand finally a meme I stole from Colline

Ask me to take pictures of any aspect of my life that you're interested in/curious about -- it can be anything from my favorite shirt to my DVDs. Leave your requests as a comment to this entry, I'll snap the pictures and post them in the next post.

(Somehow, it took me 6 hours to finish writing this post. WTH?)

laliandra: (who?)
So on Tuesday it's Graduation! And I will be able to tick Number 45. off my list, Graduate with a 2.1. A 2.1! I am still overjoyed.

And I've already ticked off number 74., go on a girlie beach holiday. More on that another day!

But I have a meme! From [ profile] elfmanfan (<3)

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. (Please note: If you simply wish to comment on something I've said but don't want to participate in the meme, that is fine. I will only give you five words if you specifically comment you with 'Words!')
Lal!Edit: Or you can give me more words! Or ask nicely. You don't have to yell if it is not in your natur

So my five words were

Wordy McWordington )

And because I am enjoying singing a song of myself, I give you, another meme! Pick 5 of my tags or interests and I will explain them to you.

How have you all been while I was away, anyhow?
laliandra: (Default)

So it turns out Finals are hard. Who knew?

I think all my fevered brain can cope with is a music meme!

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload) 5 songs that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

The lovely [info]scrtkpr gave me the letter 'I'. I've realised I pick songs because either they remind me of good times, plus they produce a really good scene for a movie in my head. I'm not alone right, other people make stories for songs, right? Right?!

1. I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You by Black Kids - This was a song that I danced to like an idiot in dingy indie clubs, yelling out the numbers with Lil. Plus the lyrics are sneakysmart and I love the cute synthy bass line. (in this scene our hero watches the girl of his dreams and knows she would be happier with him. Oh unrequited love.)

2. It Hurts to See You Dance So Well by The Pipettes - Hee! I just realised what a pair of songs these are. But anyway, I want to be a Pipette! They are all 60's girlband harmonies with funnier, feminist lyrics and they wear a lot of polka dots. (Girl realises that funny friend she always went dancing with was the one for her, but now he's moved on?)

3. Is It Any Wonder by The Shortwave Set - Not Keane. Though that is a good song too. I just really like this, all rains of piano and timpani thunder, with a dreamy vocal. I think I love this song because it creates more of an abstract mood, all pensive and sweet. And it reminds me of First Year of uni, all NBNW-ish cold rooms with thin walls and strange and strangely fun housemates.

4. In The City by The Jam - I was brought up on The Jam, my Dad is a huge fan. The Venn Diagram of my parents' musical tastes had a very small intersect, so I got a varied musical education, to put it mildly. And I like the spikiness of this. (OK, so clearly this is a stop motion type montage of friends going round a city centre, looking at the sights and messing around and generally laughing at each other.)

5. I See You, You See Me - I usually hate so much pure emotion in a song, but this so, so lovely. I think because it is fragile somehow, and kind of dark in places, and all at sea about love and yet saying that is okay. It's someone who doesn't really understand or usually believe in love, falling hopelessly. (this one has such a clear story. Really. I think that's probably why I am so fond of it. Shall we say it wraps up our dancing duo's story?)

Ok, so I'm only supposed to do five. But I have a shortlist of 21! So I'm adding a few bonuses

It's Not The End Of The World by Super Furry Animals - I have a bit of an on-off thing with the Super Furrys. I tend to forget about them and then have a song come on and go "wait! I love this song! Why don't I listen to them more?" I think this is actually a good example of all the things I like about them, gorgeous arrangements with sweeping strings and unashamed brass and random glingly things. And the fact that you can hear the Welsh accent so strongly. Lovely. (To me, this is a packing up and moving on kind of a song. Our heroine is sad to leave this room, this life behind, but she knows that she has to start a new chapter and move on. So she puts the last thing in the box and smiles.)

I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked by Ida Maria - This is a song of summer memories. It was just everywhere last year, in between my travels and watching festivals on the television in our new house in Leeds, sitting on the back step reading or watching the Olympics. It was a good summer. And the song is funny and cute and come on, that is a brilliant chorus. And Ida Maria is mad and unusual and I really like her voice. (Bad, bad friends with benefits, awkward knocking into things undressing and laughter filled flirting, all cut together)

I Only Want To Be With You by Dusty Springfield - Mum's music taste this time, and one of my all time great loves, Dusty Springfield is completely marvellous and I kind of worship her. Anyway, this is so sweet and happy! Which is a nice note to end on.

Hope alls well with all y'all! Want to play along?

laliandra: (quite contrary)

I haven't updated in a little while because of ARGDISSERTATION. But that is done now! So I bring you some 5 things memes, plus a really, really late Mission101 update.

Take a meme, if you like. I am feeling meme-ish and in a picture taking mood, and they are pretty fun ones!

In the last month I have

Baked a delicious malteaser cake!

Completed the crossword 2 times!

Handed in a piece of work I started more than a month before the deadline.

Read TDL! And Red Seas Under Red Skies! And The Thief! They were all absolutely brilliant, I would highly recommend them all. My books of the year so far, get out your monies if you can.

I saw The Official Secrets Act. I know, again. And The Specials! Who were surprisingly awesome.

Raised £35 for The Motor Neurone Society by dragging 4 of my friends along with me to a fundraiser quiz supper thing which was £7 each. The whole night raised over £1000, which is excellent.

Taken lots of pictures of the Isle of Man.

Watched the sun rise after staying up all night reading.

That's all folks!

Hello! Happy April mes chers!

I love April. I love how you can feel the seasons change or as Belle put it the other day "It really feels like it's not always Winter and never Christmas any more..." Plus it has the prettiest name by far.

But mostly I love it because it is the month of my birth! I am now 22 years old. Thank you for the well wishes my lovelies, they are much appreciated. I am late replying because, well, my birthday present from Nat? A weekend in Barcelona! SI! I am a fool and forgot my camera, so as soon as I steal some pics I will post all about it. Briefly though, sun, sangria and lychee ice cream. I have a stellar boy. But don't tell him I said that...

ICON MEME! Colline picked 6 of my icons for me to talk about. I'll do the same for anyone, just comment!

It's by [ profile] jillicons (this will become a theme, trust me) and combines many of my loves. I have a mad love maps, we have a map room in our house. Alright, it's more of a map hallway. Nonetheless! And I also adore musicals, so the Evita reference delights me.

by [ profile] precious_jemz . It took me a long time to find, but this is my perfect Moulin Rouge icon. I love Moulin Rouge with a crazy and terrible adoration. It makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. And still I watch it over and again, adoring the whole routine that this image is taken from. Plus there's Satine's dress and Ewan in a tux to enjoy.

by [ profile] jillicons . So once upon a time I said to Anna that I flitted from subject to subject like a politically aware butterfly. And she gace me the nickname of Lalafly. MWAH Anna banana! ANd Dan calls me Little Butterfly sometimes, after Pratchett character who smiles oh-so-sweetly and a ruthless streak a mile wide. Don't say you weren't warned! And this one is so colourful and pretty!

by [ profile] copperbadge . Our Sam is not just a provider of recipes and incredible fanfiction, oh no. He also provides cool steampunk icons. I love steamounk-y things a lot, and talk about them, so I love to have a relevent icon. It's so intricate and interesting.

by [profile] obsessed_chick . I knew as soon as I starting collecting icons that I wanted a Mary Poppins one. I played her in the musical when I was 17, and the still tend to act a bit like her, especially when shepherding drunk friends. This is my default WTF?!?! icon.

by [ profile] bella_sol . The lovely [profile] frantic_mice  (missing you!) picked this one for me. It's so cute and chic! A beret and boots and a sausage dog, what more could a girl want. And it's about travelling and being a free spirit. I only hope I live up to it's awesomeness.

Also, look at what the fabulous and fabulously talented [ profile] miabee023 made for me! It's a Havemercy comic in the style of xkcd, thus combining two of my favourite things. Grazie tresoro (that's the limit of my Italian) !
Oh Royston, oh Hal, oh ARI! )

Oh, and I wrote a review (no spoilers, promise) of The Demon's Lexicon, if you're interested!

laliandra: (evita!)
[Error: unknown template qotd]I know this is late but I went to watch The Official Secrets Act play instead of posting this. I feel it was a fair trade off!

So I have made a few new friends (if by 'made' you mean 'was friended by because I am a terrible wuss and fail at friending', and I do), so I thought this would be an opportune moment to fill you all in, and sneak in some extra stuff for those already in the know. Also, to me this seems like a question that could mean two things.

HI! Lets get to know each other better!

I go by the name of Lal round here, and sometimes IRL too. (Hi people-who-already-knew-that. I can't think of anything extra to put here, apart from that sometimes I am also the Maven of Cupcakes, which was news to me too!)

I study French and History -more on that here- at the University of Leeds. I should really be doing scary Final Year work instead of doing this. (and I am drowning in books and post-it notes.)

I live in a house at the end of a terrace with 3 other girls, Belle, Wren and Sal. They are charming and fabulous and put up with my absent-mindedness with great forebearance. (Also, sometimes we all sit around the table with tea and biscuits and talk about Narnia for hours on end.)

I have some too good to be true friends, but mostly they are a bit odd. I have a boyfriend called Nat, who has a grown up job and who lives to mock me. I have a slightly crazy family (you know, the type who people meet and go "Ah, I see, this explains a lot"), who are mostly in the Isle of Man or South Africa. Which are 2 of the places I grew up. (my crazyawesome Granny sent me a book about emoticons and an Aero bar today)

In regards to this journal, I have a Mission101, which I try and update every month, and I like to talk about books, languages, random things that happen to me, music and anything that takes my fancy. My most used tag is crazy conversations. I don't update everyday, but often. I often make bad jokes and literary references. Sometimes there are pictures of cake. (I think I am quite good at commenting and the like, no?)

Recently I won an Advanced Reader's Copy of Sarah Rees Brennan's- [ profile] sarahtales - book. I love her blog and her writing and fangirl her madly. (And it came today!!!! With a really sweet message! I am throughly gripped and delighted already.) So you'd need to know that I will probably mention her too.

My fandoms are wide and varied, I write fanfiction occasionally, and I run a Sekrit Book Club, but mostly I lurk in corners and am generally delighted by people's creativity, involvement, silliness, insight and ability to bring the lulz. (that means you guys!)

If there's anything you would like to know, feel free to ask. Suggestions here.

The question is weird though, because to me it initially sounded like, if someone you already knew read this journal, what would they need to know?

Well, they would need to know that I have probably given them a pseudonym. That I love my lj, but no, I don't tell RL friends about it. This is mostly because it contains Things That I Have Written, which I neurotically cannot show to people face to face. I wouldn't have to tell them that I am weird, because that, they already know...

The line between RL and online stuff is a strange one, essentially. I might need to think more and post more later. What do you think? I would write more but I need to finish my ARC!
laliandra: (cakey thoughts)
How is everyone? Surviving the second Friday 13th in as many months?

I? Am totally a Domestic Goddess!

Ok, that's a terrible lie, seeing as I am The Messiest Person Ever, but I have been cooking many exciting things.

I made a massive dinner for me and Nat on Wednesday, admittedly with his help. We had lamb chops and new potatoes and peas and gravy and sweet potato mash. And nothing went wrong! It's a culinary miracle, people! I'm a student. I'm supposed to be subsisting on noodles.

Also, I decided to make cupcakes. We had most of the ingredients and I had the urge. Plus Colline had the urge too, and you shouldn't go against The Hive Mind. I'm not usually that into cooking, it's something I do because I have to eat and I like to eat nice things, but it's not a passion. At all. I am a great disappointment to my father in that regard.

But baking, now there's something I can get into. The whole process makes me very happy, and I can actually produce delicious baked goods. I have few skills in life, but cake is definitely one of them!

So I made vanilla cupcakes with pink icing, lemon butter icing and also butterfly cakes. There were also many hundreds and thousands (or "sprinkles" as I believe you colonials call them) used and scattered about the kitchen.
Proof! )

Also, hilariously

You Are a Vanilla Cupcake

You are very sweet and mellow. You are easy going and easy to like.

You are drawn to those stronger personalities. You get along with powerful people.

You are like a cupcake because you appeal to almost every type of person.

You are friendly and accepting. You bring out other people's best qualities.

laliandra: (dance!)
Some recent conversations about the age I find myself at.

Lal: Did I mention my friend Rhys is engaged? Engaged! I went to school with him, we are the SAME AGE and he's getting MARRIED. And no one thinks that this is weird apart from me! How did this happen? When did I reach the age where people get engaged and no one thinks it's weird.

Sal: There'll be more soon, 5 people I know got engaged last year (she is a year older than me)

Lal: Oh my god.

Belle: On the plus side, it gives you an excuse to buy a really big hat...

Dad: This was not what I expected a house with 4 girls aged 21 to be like at 11 on a Friday night.

Lal, Sal and Wren: *sitting on the landing in fleecy pyjamas with glasses of water and tissues*

Lal: We are sick! We are not good at being young and trendy right now!

Sal: We are taking drugs...

Dad: I don't think getting high on Lemsip counts.

Oh hey there Facebook. Yeah, sorry, been spending a lot of time with my other internet networking site. No, look, I still like you, here, I'll do your meme. Look, over there! *puts facebook meme on lj while it's distracted*

In which there are new places, new faces and old leather satchels

I do feel that at this point I should flag up that I am not usually this much of a jet setter. It was only last year that I had the carbon footprint of a developing country, and will probably be forced to do nothing but work this year to make up for it... Nonetheless, fabulous, I recommend Abroad very highly!

So, we have reached the heady heights of

Putting up 150 beermats, getting completely soaked through, losing the SQ

This summer was, to put it mildly, a washout. Broke all the kinds of records, mostly the ones you really don't want to be broken, like wettest, coldest, greyest. That sort of thing. However my Dad came to Leeds for a few days and on one of them the sun shone brilliantly, so we did as all good English people should, and went to the cricket.

mmm, men in cricket whites... )

Bouncy castles are too for grown ups! OH HAI LJ!

Also, one Wednesday in August my bf rang me and said"I want to do something interesting for me birthday. I shall see if there is anywhere cheap to fly to this weekend." and I thought he was joking and then he rang me and said "would you like to come to Amsterdam with me tomorrow?" And I said yes.
Is it only sunny on the Continent?! )

Back to History, counting cars for cash, Final Year Panic

My Granny came to Leeds for the week, during which she scandalised random men, sat on the backstep with Nat, got taken out by ex boyfriends and also, somehow, ended up taking (not buying, they could bearly give the stuff away) the following. That's right people, it's foliage, well Honesty actually, sprayed with metallic pink paint. I think its the kitchest thing ever, Wren loves it though, and I'm keeping it as a visual representation of Days Out With My Family.
Full horror not truly captured! )

Thinking like Baudelaire, dressing like Alice, drinking like a Fresher

I also went to this amazing night called Throw Parties Not Punches,  which was a gig/club night combined with a filmshowing/fundraiser for various ethical charites. There was a lot of cake, most of my favourite people were there and my housemates Wren and Belle made lots of money for The Tibet Society, which they run. They made this Pin the Tail on the Yak/name the yak game. I wanted to call him Barack. I wasn't allowed to play. You can also see some of our beermat collection and the Grant Park poster.

and our attempts at organisation )

Tales from Manly Beach, fandom meets RL, loudly, on a train; Change In Our Lifetime!

If I had a picture of me and Sal dancing under the fireworks on November 5th, I would put it up. But instead I have a picture of The Yorkshire Scupture Park, which I went to with Sal, her friend from home, J who was wearing very impractical shoes and Cat, my friend from home. All the leaves were brown, and the sky was grey...
Ankle deep in mud though )

Upgrade to merch girl, many pretty lights, big sappy grins all round then?

While looking for pictures for this month I discovered there is not a single one of me during  December. Not one! There is a video where I am dancing with my boys from The OSA to Born To Run, but there's no way I'm putting that up! So have a picture of a cake shaped like a camera that I helped Sal to make, though she must take most of the credit. It was for the Photo Society Christmas Party. I also used my slightly alarming awesome trivia skills to write their quiz.

Its all held together with about 2 inches of icing... )

laliandra: (bearhug)
In which there are many travels, much talking and the occasional castle...

This is a meme, which I am very late at doing, and which has to split into two parts because I cannot get some of the more recent photos off my camera. Foiled by technology, again. One picture plus explanation and 3 (sometimes cryptic) sentences to sum up each month.

Incidentally, I am giving paid LJ two months to seduce me. So far I am enjoying the iconage. Look, a bear hugging a flamingo! Micie gave it to me, isn't it the cutest thing. I must find more icons to fill up the yawning spaces in my list.

Anyway, here we go, 2008, January to June.

I started this year as I planned to go on, covered in gin.
To be honest I was glad to start a new year, because while some of 2007 had been amazing, some of it had been all kinds of crazy stressful difficult. And I knew that 2008 had a lot of good stuff just waiting to happen in it.

Freezing in France, first steps in fandom, first MacDs in years.

I also fought baggage restrictions, the cancellation of all trains west of Preston and my own ineptitude to be home for my loveliest Lil’s birthday, the only pictures of which are of my cleavage and my foot
. So here is... my foot )

Teasing relatives with fake boyfriends, browsing overpriced underwear shops with old ladies, yet more freezing.

I went back to Leeds to meet with my future-at-that-time-in-the-past housemates to look for a house for us all to live in. It was a trip that required planning of military precision and proportions, being as we had to get 4 girls from 4 countries (me from France, Sal from Belgium, Belle from Germany and Wren from Iceland) in Leeds at the same time. I saw 11 houses in 3 days, and we fell in love with just one, our House in the Hessles. This is the view from my by Sal )

Stephen Fry as my England in a foreign land, arguing over possible twins on There Will Be Blood in 3 languages, discussing hopes with my pupils.

It was also the birthday of my Austrian madchen, Carina, who gets no nickname because her name is too awesome, carino mio. We had a party, drank a lot of Kir Royales and then the next day tried to show our visitors around town until we all collapsed in a heap on the bench by the river. Carina is awake, I am asleep, Petra could be either and Martina is so snoring...
and we all clearly need some sun! )

Visitors to break umbrellas and go to the seaside with, Jonhannesburg like a place from a novel, no longer a cousin but temporary sister.

Arg, it was hard to pick this month, because I had lots of visitors and also went to South Africa to see my family. But, to sum up, it was my birthday. The visitors came partly for that, and the trip was a present. 21! Go me! To celebrate Belle, Sal and I made castle cakes, chateaux gateaux, for me and Sal, seeing as she turned 22 the day before. Aren’t they amazing?
mmm, strawberry ramparts... )

So, to Normany, Brittany and Bordeaux with Austrian lovelies. To York, Lincoln, Oxford and Iceland to visit old friends. And then home.

May was manic. The highlight was absolutely going to see Wren in Iceland. We hired the tiniest car in all the world and drove to what felt like the top of it. Every view was otherworldly and breathtaking.
Fjordin' )

Fun in the sun at the TT races, dullsleepdull, singing in Salzburg, beer in Barvaria.

Not much happened in June, until I went to Munich with Sal to visit Belle. It was amazing, and we talked so much that Belle lost her voice. As an extra bonus, the weather was gorgeous. Look how sunny it is in the Olympic Park!
With BMW world peeking over the trees )

More soon, when I figure out why my camera hates me... What were your highlights of 2008? Cryptic sentences explained on request...

laliandra: (booksmarts)
I am home, home on the Isle! There is a roaring log fire, my dog is sitting at my feet and my Dad is making stew with dumplings for supper. Life is pretty damn good!

Look you guys, look see the pretty and oh so smart icon that [ profile] luchalibrarian made for me! I have never had an icon made for me before, I bow down before it.

So Micie tagged me in a music meme, and I am a slave to her wishes.

Shuffle ur Ipod, pick 5 songs and look for them in YOUTUBE. If you can't find them in youtube shuffle till ya do.

The Killers - On Top. I picked this video version because it has subtitles that I found kinda fascinating. I am totally a languages geek and love to see how people translate stuff.

Goldfrapp - Tiptoe. Oh ,she is so cool. And effortlessly sexy.

Ash - Girl From Mars. Finally, itunes has picked a song by an artist that is one of my favourites! Tim Wheeler wrote in when he was 17. So unfair!

Judy Garland - Embraceable you. So Judy Garland isn't the version I have, but who can resist her. Its a beautiful song, and a beautiful version and she is so lovely it breaks your heart, and there is some delightful dancing later on.

That was fun! Though it does remind me of the sad loss of my ipod :(. But, you know, try it.

And now I have started memeing I cannot stop.
