I am super behind on lots of stuff because I moved house this weekend and we don't have internet yet. Gasp! So I am doing stuff by phone which is kind of a pain in the neck... Anyway. I have a new address now. If you would like it, comment and let me know. And the lovely [livejournal.com profile] miabee023 is writing Leviathan fic (Yay!) and needs help with some scottish folk music. Help, flist? Alright well, I am going back to unpacking and contemplating the sunburn I got yesterday. How is everyone?

I totally failed to ever have your old address, but if you wouldn't mind giving me your new one that'd be all sorts of lovely. :)

I used to live in Scotland so I know a little bit about Scottish folk music, though not masses - what does she need to know about?

Sorry about your sunburn love, and I hope the unpacking finishes soon. I totally sympathise!

Hello! I actually need to know something annoyingly specific - basically, what kind of songs would've been popular in Scotland around the time of WWI. As in, what songs people would've known and enjoyed singing. I'd prefer it to be a song that maybe people nowadays would also recognize, but accuracy is important as well, so I'm willing to sacrifice that aspect. I know this is totally random, but if you can help me at all, I would appreciate it so much. Thank you!

Done!

The unpacking continues apace. At least all the furniture is in its right pace now. That was not so fun in this heat!

Oooh, congratulations! I'd love to have your updated address, so I could send you a congratulatory card... If I may.
Happy unpacking! It's absolutely liberating, once you get in the proper mood. Yeah. Hee hee.

Yeeeeeeah. Well, at least it means I get to organise my books, which I always enjoy. Thank you, my lovely Ria *hearts*

Thanks!

I too love organising books, even if it's rather a time-consuming (and dusty...) thing to do.
Isn't it lovely to have a kind of a fresh start with a new home? I'm all a-flutter for you. :)

Well. You're just awesome, aren't you. Thank you so much for asking your ENTIRE FLIST for help in my struggle to write a fic that isn't totally historically inaccurate. Such action definitely goes above and beyond the call of duty where trying to answer my random questions is concerned.

Good luck with your unpacking, and I would love to know your new address whenever you have a chance.

Don't know if you got any kind of response to this, but a safe bet is always going to be a Robert Burns poem/song. He's a bit of a national treasure for scots, womanising git that he was. 'Auld Lang Syne' is one of his you will probably know - sung at new year when midnight strikes? My Mum's favourite is 'Afton Water', she learnt it growing up in Scotland. The opening lines are 'Flow gently sweet Afton, among thy green braes'.
Dunno if this is any help at all, but if you want more info, I spend most of my holidays in Scotland with my family, and have my Mum on hand to answer any questions, so I should be able to help a little :)

That's so wonderfully helpful, thank you so much! I'll look through his songs and see which one would be most thematically appropriate for the fic.

Also, I do have one other question - something I've always wondered is if the song Loch Lomond is as well known (or well-regarded, I guess) in Scotland as it is here in the US. It's one of the only three Scottish pieces I know, so I was just wondering if it's as popular over there as we Americans seem to think it is.

Yes, it is a really popular song. Ironically, I didn't recognise it by its name though - I hit youtube, heard the opening bars and new exactly which one you meant xD. It's quite often sung at folk festivals, ecetera.

Not a problem at all! I figured that random people have random knowledge, so best to just ask everyone!

I have PMed you my address :)

Also, I blame you for the fact that I have spent a LOT of time watching the vlogbrothers youtube channel on my phone. Seriously. I have watched about 2 years of videos from the beginning. I am not even kidding.

DFTBA!

Got it! I will write it down immediately in my way-too-gigantic address book. (I feel like the makers of address books always assume that I have way more friends than I actually do. It's kind of awkward.)

YES, ANOTHER NERDFIGHTER MADE. I am now responsible for three new Nerdfighters in the course of the past year and wow I am overwhelmingly proud of this. So go ahead - blame me as much as you want! (Lord knows my roommate and my friend Julia have.) But yes - DFTBA!

Heeee! Who they think has two pages of people whose names begin with Z, I do not know.

Well, it is the AWESOME kind of blame. :D I love everything about them, really. So happy making. I should go buy some John Green books...

You are like some sort of nerdmaster!

Yeah, I think I'm doing much better than average knowing just three people who fall into that category (and one them is my dad...).

JOHN GREEN BOOKS ARE AMAZING. My favorites are definitely Paper Towns and Will Grayson, Will Grayson. An Abundance of Katherine's is a little lighter (though Paper Towns and Will Grayson are both pretty hilarious as well), while Looking For Alaska is... well, a bit depressing, even though it's definitely a great book. I would probably recommend starting with Paper Towns, since that is (for me) the quintessential John Green book, but of course any of them would be fantastic.

I was actually thinking of nominating Paper Towns for next month's bookdeyada, because then I would have the perfect reason to buy it!

Sorry for the delay in replying, btw. We still haven't got internet so I am currently camping in a local Macdonalds, using their Wifi.

Anyway, they all sound so great! Oh man, I love it when you get book excitement :D

I WOULD VOTE FOR IT. (I'd still really love us reading The Magicians, though, since I haven't been able to discuss that book with anyone and I am dying to discuss it.) We seem to be reading an awful lot of YA novels - not that there's anything wrong with that, obviously, but it seems curious. I wasn't a huge fan of this month's - what was your very general opinion? (Or have you had a chance to read it yet?)

That is a lovely mental image, by the way. Stay classy, Lal.

Success, for I have posted it!

LET US BLAME THE OCTOPUS. And in no way our appalling defence. Woe.

Seriously, they want the ref's head on a stick. Maybe along with Fabio Capello's. Siiiiiiiigh. Well. There is still the rest of the tournament. And Wimbledon!

My internet access is limited to going to MacDonalds and using their internet rn D:
