Welcome! Can I offer you some tea?

Please, have a cake.

I'm [livejournal.com profile] laliandra , mostly shortened to Lal. I'm prone to rambling, spontaneous singing, sarcasm and absent-mindedness. I wish I could carry the whole of XKCD round with me to sum up my life. I would kind of like to be a con woman or a Blue Peter presenter when I grow up.

I have a livejournal account that I live at, a Twitter account (now locked but feel free to add me) that I mostly use to flail at people and an AO3 account that I love.

I write fanfiction and my Master List is under the cut. I feel so accomplished, you have no idea. This is literally the most organised thing in my entire life.

Um, my feeling about friending is, essentially, YAY FRIENDS \o/

Please, do friend me, and then leave me a comment so I know who you are and so we can get to know each other. This is the place to ask any questions that you might have or say hi or point out any terrible typos or bad Americanisms or general fails I have made in my fics. Seriously, it takes a village, you're welcome to join mine.

MASTER LIST! )

More About The Author :D

Due a nomadic childhood I have a weird nowhere accent that confuses people. Once upon a time I was a student of French and History and I still love to talk languages (moods! Loan words! translation loss!) and how the people of the past are not the Other but just us, then. I recommend books both personally and professionally and inhabit a tiny London flat with my tiny girlfriend and a large stuffed octopus.
[livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada_club[livejournal.com profile] marmalade_fish

I love a lot of fandoms and a lot of things that I am not actively fanish about but would love to ramble and squee with you about!

So, yes, anything you want to know, just ask! Here are some suggestions which I have shamelessly stolen from other posts. Top Fives! Random Facts about one of my Fics (like DVD extras only ramblier)! The Inside The Actor's Studio Quiz! Or anything you like.

It's a pune (or play on words)

Hey you guys! I have a googledoc open where I am writing up various terrible stories from my life (yes, including how I accidentally flashed a bunch of people at a wedding) because my existence is sprinkled with stories that make me sound like a sitcom character. So if you have any requests, speak now.

Also I should not be allowed to write fic on tumblr. Someone remind me of this.

Anyway, I got memes! From the incomparable [livejournal.com profile] antistar_e

1. Reply to this post with "MEME IS NOT A DIRTY WORD" and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Heh most of these end with ALSO PRETTY *shallowest* )

Meme Two! This one has feeeeeelings.

Reply with "and while we're at it, NEITHER IS SQUEE" and I'll give you four fandoms.
Write about your favorite character from each fandom.

And fandoms! Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, The Social Network, and Merlin.

So many feels and also indecision )

Things That I Would Like To Share

 Hey guys!

I have about 4 posts that I want to make queued up in my head, so here we go! This one has the vague theme of "I made a thing! Would you like it?"

First of all, I took part in podklb's amazing Awesome Lady Podfic Anthology project for the [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon  fest, which celebrates fabulous ladies. A whole bunch of awesome podficcers read ficlets from the Awesome Ladies Ficathon.

You can download the anthology as a podbook here (right-click and save), and there are alternate ways to download at the master post (for example, you can browse by fandom and DL individual files).

It was a really great project to be a part of, I had a lot of fun recording my two ficlets and I've listened to the whole thing all the way through once and plan to re-listen approximately five billionty times. There are over 70 ficlets read by many really amazing ladies, and I know I'm going to enjoy it so much. Even the fandoms that I don't know, I have loved the ficlets for.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] podklb is a superstar for organising and collating it, and all the readers did a bang up job, so y'all should DOWNLOAD, LISTEN, COMMENT, PROFIT \o/

I recorded two ficlets, one from the Awesome Ladies Ficathon and one from the Real Woman Fest. I've never recorded anything properly before and it was difficult and strange and great. You can download and listen to them if all you want is to hear my Mysterious Cadences but I really recommend the whole project :D

Also, yes, I am aware of the horrible background buzz. I tried, god knows how I tried to get rid of it, but essentially Audacity hates me and my face. Woe.

I'd love to know what you thought of them!

It All Makes Sense In The End
Fandom: Dr Who
Original Ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] chaletian

I love Amy Pond. Like, infinite amounts of love for her. And Eleven. And Rory. So, this was super fun for me, and I got to do an Eleven ramble and OH AMY, YOU ARE THE MOST SASSY AND WISE AND FABULOUS.

After All These Years.
Fandom: Kate Winslet RPF
Original Ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] gretazreta

So podklb was like, I would die of happiness if someone recorded this and I aim to kill please. This fic is lovely and lyrical and so, so smart, and Kate's actress POV is perfect and it makes her and Leo make so much sense to me

Aaaaaand for nearly a year the lovely [livejournal.com profile] brimtoast and I have been running this little thing called [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada_club (which used to be at a journal but we've made into a comm). It's an extremely cool fandom centric bookclub. Which is to say, we all come from fandom so when we talk books we use internet language and talk Fake Boyfriend tropes and sometimes I say ridiculous things like I think fanfic is our fairytales and people agree and there is unadulterated squee. It's a really friendly, smart, comfortable place and I love it a lot.

We read a book every month. Members nominate a book and then we have a comm wide vote to pick. Nominations for our next book open on Monday!

And seeing as we've moved to a proper community and we're getting older and wiser, we are having a membership drive of sorts! So if this is something you think you'd like please join us (watch me try and fail to sound creepy. Join usssss). Or help us pimp our lovely club with these amaaaaaaaaazing banners that the super talented [livejournal.com profile] miabee023 made for us :D

Other than that, how are all y'all? Any questions? Let's talk *chinhands*

Tales of Public Inappropriateness Without Shame or Censorship

This weekend Nat and I went to that there Londontown to catch up with old friends aplenty. There was a concerning few days midweek when the snow got so bad that I got sent home from work and sat in the car with a co-worker (my favourite co-worker and not just because she agreed to drive me most of the way home) and we couldn't see anything beyond the front of the car bonnet. Which was a little alarming, to say the least!

So we drove down as far as Luton and stayed in a Travelodge. It was not exactly the most glamorous night of our lives.

On Saturday we made it safely to Belle's house in the Tropics (if by the tropics you mean Middlesex and I do) where there no snow. No snow at all! Our tiny minds were blown... Then we all ventured into London to sample the delights of the food market on the South Bank. We shamelessly exploited all the free samples on offer. It appears that student living leaves its mark. The plan had been to wander the German Market but we spent a lot of time mocking the extremely poor "Snow Globe Experience" and then it rained a lot so what we actually did was go to (HUT THING) and drink very sweet mulled wine. I was meeting my other two housemates from university, Sal and Wren, and their boyfriends, and it was great. I miss my girls a lot.

Then we planned to go to Covent Garden but it was raining and we got distracted by the giant ship in a bottle on the Forth Plinth, so what we actually did was go to the pub. Are you noticing a pattern here? We were forced into having extremely grown up conversations about our jobs (Belle teaches English as a second language, Wren works for the Historical Royal Palaces Society and Sal for a children's charity. My friends are vastly more impressive than me) and our housing situation and the cost of travel and the weather.

Then when we were done with that we got talking about books, which always happens and had about a half hour discussion about YA and how The Book Thief is amazing and made me and Sal bawl our eyes out. Apparently telling people this does not make them want to read the book. But you should! Because it's really good! We were standing in the corner of the pub and the whole thing became kind of animated because we all care a lot about books and the Australians sitting at the table next to us clearly thought that we were all crazy and/or some kind of in pub entertainment.

Me: But once you get past the genocide! It's actually very uplifting!

Belle: The whole thing made me want to ring my brother and yell at him and then *makes sweeping gesture* I don't know, tell him he's awesome.

Sal: Where was all this teen literature when I was a teenager? 14 year old me is PISSED OFF.

Me: Oh, you know Nat doesn't read fiction.
Wren: (Her boyfriend) neither.
The four of us: *turn as one and tut at the boyfriends*

We went out for dinner and while we were in the bar waiting I got a text update from twitter in which [livejournal.com profile] moleskinned quoted some fic and I got these terrible snorting giggles.

Everyone: What, Lal, what?
Me: Er. You wouldn't, it's a, never mind. Internet joke.
Wren: It's going to be about porn, isn't it?
Belle and Sal: *nod sagely*
Sal's boyfriend who has not spent a lot of time with us as a group: *gives Sal a 'they seemed like such nice girls' look*

Sunday was a particularly lovely day that we spent on the canal boat that Wren lives on with her boyfriend. It's like a real house all condensed down into a teeny tiny floating space, which Wren has also managed to make stylish and lovely with cushions and baubles and plants. We were talking about how Wren is very good at growing things.

Wren's Boyfriend: I won the longest chilli competition at work.
Me: *tries not to laugh*
Sal: *starts to giggle*
Me: *catches Sal's eye*
Me, Sal, Belle and Wren: *all laugh at once*
All the boys: *look confused*

Then we took the boat out down the Thames. It was a gorgeous day and we made it to Hampton Court Palace. AKA Wren's office. Like I said, vastly cooler than me.

Wren gave us her tour and I added ridiculous but nonetheless true facts about the Tudors and may have suggested that Henry VIII was kind of foxy. You know. In his day.

Then we drove the boat back and made mulled wine. It's very important that you get those steps in the right order.

The next day I went to meet the extremely marvellous [livejournal.com profile] hanelissar and [livejournal.com profile] altogetherisi for mooching and Harry Potter watching. While Hannah and I were waiting in Waterloo for Isi we went to WH Smith and rearranged their children and young adult section so that all the copies of Hush, Hush and Crescendo were covered by other books.

Further Fabulous Adventures (because this entry is already flist killingly long) )

The whole thing has left me in a far superior mood for the whole week. Clearly all I needed was to spend some time with people who I can be myself with. Which seems to mostly involve making all bystanders stop in their conversations, but that's practically a tradition in my family.

Have you all had good weeks/weekends? Ready for Christmas (ahahahaha I am so not, before you ask)

Still To Do: Everything

Oh, god, I haven't posted in forever and a day. Or, like, three weeks but whatever. The internet moves at the speed of light and all.

So, I suspect that y'all suspect me of having achieving great and marvellous things in my absence from your flists.

This is sadly not the case.

Sorry.

My boyfriend Nat has been working away, many miles away for the last month, only home at the weekends. So I've been Home Alone. I meant to get a lot of stuff done, mostly writing and maybe some recording. But mainly what I did was mope around the house, watching a lot of crap TV and eating biscuits. Sulkily.

I also went to work. Work sucks, I know, right? It's reached a stage with my co-workers which feels very Assimilate or Die. Like, I have next to nothing in common with any of them, and they are not interested in most of the things I am passionate about and. I can either keep myslef to myself and listen to the music that I like and podfic. Or I can feign an interest in things I really don't care about (can I fake it about fake tan?) and stop myself making sarcastic comments (I swear, I don't mean it badly, it's my sense of humour)  and using complicated words (which Karen [who thought that euthanasia was a country] accused me of doing to take the piss). Stop being the proper version of myself. I don't know. I think I've got so used to being with people like, well, like you guys. Who send me tweets supporting my choice to grin like an idiot while I rewatch clips of Glee on the train and who use words like, "proselytize" and who blame me and &hearts me and squee about sexy revelations with me and just GET ME.

ANYWAY. Enough of my angstface/FANDOMADORATION. Seriously though. You guys. <3.

Let us focus on what I actually have achieved...

I made my Master List/ Introduction Post! VICTORY IS MINE AND IT COMES IN DELICIOUSLY LISTY FORM. It took me an upsettingly long time because livejournal hates my face and also my attempts at html. Oh, so very much html. So, new friends, old friends, lurkers, please feel free to go comment and ask anything you would like to (I have included suggestions but have no doubt you'll think of something much more awesome) or just marvel at the amount of of RPF I seem to have ended up writing \o?

I read Who Fears Death for bookdeyada and it was amazing and set in Africa and full of fabulous female characters and non Western mythology and, ugh, I loved it so much. I love it when you get to the end of a good book and you just feel this really bone deep feeling of satisfaction, you know? Shoe joy is all glitter shiny and instant but book joy is real fulfilment.

I recorded myself playing television theme tunes on the kazoo and singing show tunes for various people, thus proving that I probably shouldn't be left on my own for long periods of time.

I broke my laptop charger dancing to My Chemical Romance but now have a new, shiny one that actually works properly and not just in one special position which takes forever to find. My precious laptop, I have missed you so! *pets, gently*

I signed up for Muskrat Jamboree which is a very very awesome fandom convention. In America. So, yeah. I AM GOING TO AMERICA and I am going to stay with [livejournal.com profile] brimtoast in New York and meet [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact and [livejournal.com profile] novembersmith and [livejournal.com profile] swiiftly in Boston and we are going to a FANDOM CONVENTION and OMG I AM SO EXCITED CAN YOU TELL?!?! So, if you are in the New York or Boston area around the end of March/start of April we should totally meet up and have coffee or something. I plan on riding the A train and charming people with my accent!

I have been around on other parts of the internet, even though I have been a terrible poster. I have been on twitter, like, all the fricking time. I live on Twitter. How did I survive work without Twitter? I have a service that allows me to use Twitter like a text message, where I just write out the message and send it to a number, which I find extremely cool. I get to text people all over the  world for free! So I was discussing the Glee version of Teenage Dream as sung by AVPM's Darren Criss with [livejournal.com profile] kaiserkuchen  and she made an excellent point and so I replied

Yes, yes eye fucking, exactly \O/

You may notice the distinct lack of an @ at the beginning of that tweet (incidentally have I mentioned that I hate almost all the words associated with Twitter? Tweeting *shudders*) so of course it or rather Yes, yes eye fucking, exactly \O/
showed up on EVERYONE's feed. There was some confusion, but mostly in a "Oh, Lal, what is it this time?" kind of way. Which I appreciated. I feel it is a fairly accurate summary of my feelings on the subject anyway. It is extra amusing to me because just a few days I had been telling Kaz that it is basically my greatest fear that one day I will accidentally text Twitter instead of my boyfriend... I mean, going on what most of our conversations are like it will be something about the weather or poorly spelled shop signs but YOU NEVER KNOW.

I wrote a teeny tiny sequel to my Inception subway!AU fic, (AKA the fic of nothing but crosswords and snarkary, or My Subconscious Loves You, [livejournal.com profile] brimtoast) for [livejournal.com profile] bookshop 's fluff meme. I am well, well aware that this is NOT what I am supposed to be writing, but anyway, I did. This is because I am powerless to resist the lure of being ordered to write something delightful and schmoopy and because the fluff meme is like a big fuzzy blanket that I can wrap myself in after a particularly crappy day and because I wanted to do something nice for many reasons but mainly, as I said to C,  because sometimes people in fandom are dicks. There is a little more further down the thread, by the way, so scroll down if you feel your sugar levels can take it...

I also went dancing a lot, which remains awesome. We are doing a samba routine at a Carnaval club night in December and my friend is trying to persuade us all to wear bikinis. I will be on Team More Than Bikinis, Oh Please, For The Love Of God, but I suspect my team will not win. Possibly we need a snappier name.

And you guys? How have you been? Didja miss me?!

And so it begins...

I am twitterpated! (thank you [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact)

TA-DA!

I blame Isi. She said it was good for procrastination and mild stalking, and I am powerless to resist such lures. Enchanted, ensnared etcetc

Um. Now what does one do?

Apart from make large eyes at [livejournal.com profile] mcollinknight . Kaz is here too. JOIN USSSSSSS.

If I am supposed to say what I'm doing, it's writing about the weapon that is deathly politeness, househunting and pining for my ebook of The Demon's Covenant which I was cruelly dragged from. WOE.

And that is surely more than 140 characters of what I'm doing. My life is so complex, y'all! :D!

See, I will still need LJ. You can just use twitter to remind me about all the things I said I'd post...

So, er, follow me? Or something?

Things I have not been doing: Posting

Things I have been doing: Rewrites. Rewrites of rewrites. Seeing Adam Lambert (!!!). Making a flux capacitor. Being rained on.

So, this is me apologising for the lack of me, and then leaving again. :)?

Also, this is to say

YOU SHOULD ALL CHECK OUT THE BOOKDEYADA DISCUSSION IF YOU HAVE READ THE HUNGER GAMES BY SUSANNE COLLINS.

[livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada is a super awesome bookclub where people say smart things about books and also we are fannish and delighted and seriously, people are SO SMART.

With A Cherry On Top

So!

I am 23.

It feels much as 22, only less symmetrical. I had a wonderful birthday yesterday, thank you so, so much for all the messages etc of good wishes and sprinkles and all that. I felt quite overwhelmed with love. You are all darlings of the highest order, and I feel very special having y'all as my flist. All other flists pale into insignificance.

Anyway, I had a lovely day. I went to a very excellent all day music festival on Sunday, so got up late and got cards and lovely things from the internet like virtual mix CDs and flower picspams.  There was some mooching, also some faffing, and making people do my bidding (MUHAHAHA). Plus phone calls from awesome people, and cards with umbrellas on them.

Then Nat took me out for a swanky meal, and I had a very large black forest gateau with cherry ice cream.

But, it turns out that my birthday is a Magic Day! So many random good things happened! I did not know I had such power. So, here are five very cool things that we can all enjoy together, in light of 5th April being lucky with extra luck sprinkles.

1. One of the bands that I saw on Sunday were Hope and Social. Check Them Out! They were amazing. They have a brass section. And they played this one song that I just fell in love with.

Red, Red Rose by Hope and Social. When they play it live, they do call and response with "Blue Skies..." and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

2. So, I had this conversation with Nat during my birthday meal.

Nat: I don't really have a present for you. I don't know what you want! But. You know I was trying to get a ticket for the first day of Leeds?

Me: No? You were?

Nat: What? Because, you do know who is playing there on the Friday?

Me: No? Who?

Nat: You do know that the Libertines are reforming for Leeds Festival?

Me: NO. What? OMG, what? *nearly falls off chair*

Nat: But... How did? You live in the internet, how did you not know this? Anyway, would you like a ticket as your present?

Me: *looks around* This restaurant is such a bad place for an attack of flailing.

SO YES. Did you know this? The Libs. They broke my heart last time, they had better stay friends forever this time round. I am putting my faith in you, Pete Doherty, do not let me down. If you haven't heard of them, you should definitely get on board, they were, are, a great British band. And they will always be extra special to me because both my boyfriend and my best friend adored them for years, and then I got to introduce my campfire ladies to them. I think I was slightly dazed at poor Nat for a while because, surreal! So, yes. The LIBS.

3. My dearest [livejournal.com profile] mcollinknight is doing a LADIES ARE AWESOME post. You should all go play. It's a great idea and also a tiny bit for my birthday, so I feel like I can invite y'all to her place. Just be good, don't break anything, be nice about Canada.  We need more pictures and so on of awesome ladies being awesome!

4. Because pictures of cats are always amazing. This is Alfie, the unsubtle cat that I mentioned in my last post. He is ridiculous and likes to clomp around my Granny's house muttering to himself. He has tiger paws and the brain of a kitten...

5. My Dad got me a Good Deal of Amazon vouchers for my birthday. Which means that I will be set up to buy a book for [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada for a good few months to come. And also that if anyone would really love to join but doesn't think that they can afford to buy a copy of this month's (really excellent) book, The Hunger Games, well, I could probably  gift you one. Because it's A FANDOM BOOKCLUB AND I WANT EVERYONE TO JOIN AND HAVE FUN TOO! Ahem. Sorry, I am still really excited about it...[livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada !

There we are! 5 awesome things for the 6th. A catrillion hearts to you all.

Bookdeyada!

So, I am home for a weeks holiday on the Isle of Man. It's fairly lovely, I went to a wind orchestra concert and out for teas and lunches and such. I'm staying with my Granny and my Great Aunt, who are both, in the grand tradition of my family, crazy-awesome. Also their cat Alfie who is the least subtle cat in all the world. He likes to drape himself across my lap and demand stomach skritching. It's pretty good.

Anyway, I have been supposed to post about this for ages but my internet access here is limited and I have been distracted by trying to write make out scenes (ARGHARD). But I digress from the matter at hand, which is that I have exciting news!

So, books are great, right? And talking about books is great, and the internet is great and fandom, fandom is fantastic. Well, the lovely [livejournal.com profile] brimtoast and a couple of other equally lovely people (and myself) decided that the only way to make these things even better would be to combine them all.

So, we present [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada , a fandom book club! And you should all come play with us! We are going to read abook a month and I loooooooove talking books with y'all and it's going to be SO MUCH FUN.

And yes it is called bookdeyada mainly for my own amusement (and hopefully the amusement of others).

You can go now and nominate a book for April. So, you should totally do that, or just wait for a decision and then join in the discussion. You don't need to be all Literary Criticism about it, you can just read the book and go EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! with other people. Just, book clubs are so much fun, but it isn't possible for everyone to get to a real life one . And in this book club you can compare characters to Remus from the Shoebox project or talk about slash and canon vs fanon and shipping, because it's a fandom book club. How cool is that?! I am excited! I don't know if the exclamation marks made this clear enough!

GO! THE POWER OF LAL COMPELS YOU! ADD US A FRIEND! NOMINATE A BOOK! READ THE SUPER COOL INTRO!

Or you can ask me questions first. But I recommend doing BOTH. Then come tell me all about how you have joined and how awesome it is going to be!

[livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada , [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada , [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada , [livejournal.com profile] bookdeyada !

Dearest Yuletider (or What Lal Loves in Stories)

Hi Person who is going to write me a story! And Everyone else who is along for the ride.

So, this is my yuletide letter, which is a teeny bit late seeing as assignments have already gone out and for that I am so, so sorry. Because, basically, you are SO awesome. You picked one of my fandoms, I already know that you are awesome.

So, there are things that I love in general in any kind of story.

<3 Banter. It is my greatest, dearest love. It can be flirtatious banter or friendly banter or people trying to get one up over their nemesis banter. I don't care. I am a banter!slut and I don't care who knows it.

<3 People being passionate about things. Just, yes, yes please. Which is linked to -

<3 People being good at stuff. I don't care what! I especially like to see ladies being purely competent at stuff, because, yeah, that is still upsettingly lacking. Extra bonus points if that is ladies being matter of factly good at stuff without it being made a Huge Deal By Everyone and making them any less of a normal, flawed person. Speaking of which.

<3 Flaws. I like my characters to have them, and I like the people who they love to have them and I like them to recognise that the person that they adore, in whatever sense of the word, has them.

<3 Trivia. What I mean by this is, little details that make up a world. Or fun facts about squid. Whatever. My greatest fic moment was sharing my "polar bears are ninja" funfact with the world. I just like all the crazy small facts of this world, and all the fictional ones, too.

Much love,
Lal, who just loves stories...

So, that's what I like! But really, I'm easy. What do YOU like?!

The Day Today

I am going to try and be organised today!

First OoB: IT'S JUNE. Which means it's Book Day, aka the release day of The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan ([livejournal.com profile] sarahtales ).

Do not walk, run and go and purchase this book! DO IT! Ahem. Seriously though, it's the best book I've read all year, and I have read many books, many of them excellent. I can't think of a single reason why not. Also, the fandom is kickass, and you get to be a [livejournal.com profile] marmalade_fish .

I fail at summerising, so here is the book in 20 words, according to Miss Rees Brennan " Fencing. Fighting wolves with bike chains. Torture. Demons. Magicians. Ravens. Books. Families. Rooftop chases. Lies. More lies. Love." If you need more convincing I will explain why any one of these things is impossibly awesome.

Second OoB: My brain twin [livejournal.com profile] mcollinknight has returned to us from Kenya! So I am Order of Businessing in her honour. She built a school, people, I have no words for how sparkling she is.

Third OoB: SUMMER. HOTHOT SUMMER. I am so happy that it is hot and sunny. I love Leeds in the summer, because of the park.

It was sunny a second before )

Everyone goes and plays and sunbathes and meets up and barbeques. It's brilliant. What did I do in the park? Well firstly i wore a very large straw hat. But I also had a range of fun activities
I love my notebook! )
Eating ice lollies, reading the paper/doing the crossword, reading The Demon's Lexicon, again, and writing Jenn's birthday story.

Which brings me to my Forth OoB: Namely, it may seem like I haven't been writing a lot but, um, I've been hiding it away! I've been doing bits and dabs of writing for a cute AU, which kind of borders on RPS, and I didn't know if all y'all would be okay with that. But, well, I'm enjoying it, and I like what I've written more than anything I've done in a long time, and so if you would like to read it, I am going to unlock it/link. There is kissing in the rain, the throwing of inanimate objects and boys being hopeless! But also, it uses real life politicians and pundits, so if you feel uncomfortable with that, cool, I'll warn, and I really, really don't mind if you don't read it.

OoB Five: Mission 101! Holy crapola, this is late...

I have
  • made Thai Green curry from scratch.
  • made Eccles cakes, which are a northern tradition, and very yummy, pastry and dried fruit affairs. I love making pastry!
  • Completed The Guardian crossword, in ten mintues flat! 4/10
  • Begun an address book.
  • Ginone for drinks with people from French and a photo exhibition with Melinda.
I didn't drink champagne on Mum's birthday. I was busy and poor and in the middle of exams. I might make that a different goal, IDK.

So I'm feeling very summery in a dress I got for free, with the summer stretching out before me, full of potential. I'm pretty damn happy right about now.

I'm an Aries ok, I'm supposed to be bossy...

Hello! Happy April mes chers!

I love April. I love how you can feel the seasons change or as Belle put it the other day "It really feels like it's not always Winter and never Christmas any more..." Plus it has the prettiest name by far.

But mostly I love it because it is the month of my birth! I am now 22 years old. Thank you for the well wishes my lovelies, they are much appreciated. I am late replying because, well, my birthday present from Nat? A weekend in Barcelona! SI! I am a fool and forgot my camera, so as soon as I steal some pics I will post all about it. Briefly though, sun, sangria and lychee ice cream. I have a stellar boy. But don't tell him I said that...

ICON MEME! Colline picked 6 of my icons for me to talk about. I'll do the same for anyone, just comment!

01.

It's by [livejournal.com profile] jillicons (this will become a theme, trust me) and combines many of my loves. I have a mad love maps, we have a map room in our house. Alright, it's more of a map hallway. Nonetheless! And I also adore musicals, so the Evita reference delights me.

02.

by [livejournal.com profile] precious_jemz . It took me a long time to find, but this is my perfect Moulin Rouge icon. I love Moulin Rouge with a crazy and terrible adoration. It makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. And still I watch it over and again, adoring the whole routine that this image is taken from. Plus there's Satine's dress and Ewan in a tux to enjoy.

03.

by [livejournal.com profile] jillicons . So once upon a time I said to Anna that I flitted from subject to subject like a politically aware butterfly. And she gace me the nickname of Lalafly. MWAH Anna banana! ANd Dan calls me Little Butterfly sometimes, after Pratchett character who smiles oh-so-sweetly and a ruthless streak a mile wide. Don't say you weren't warned! And this one is so colourful and pretty!

04.

by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge . Our Sam is not just a provider of recipes and incredible fanfiction, oh no. He also provides cool steampunk icons. I love steamounk-y things a lot, and talk about them, so I love to have a relevent icon. It's so intricate and interesting.

05.

by [profile] obsessed_chick . I knew as soon as I starting collecting icons that I wanted a Mary Poppins one. I played her in the musical when I was 17, and the still tend to act a bit like her, especially when shepherding drunk friends. This is my default WTF?!?! icon.

06.

by [livejournal.com profile] bella_sol . The lovely [profile] frantic_mice  (missing you!) picked this one for me. It's so cute and chic! A beret and boots and a sausage dog, what more could a girl want. And it's about travelling and being a free spirit. I only hope I live up to it's awesomeness.

Also, look at what the fabulous and fabulously talented [livejournal.com profile] miabee023 made for me! It's a Havemercy comic in the style of xkcd, thus combining two of my favourite things. Grazie tresoro (that's the limit of my Italian) !
Oh Royston, oh Hal, oh ARI! )

Oh, and I wrote a review (no spoilers, promise) of The Demon's Lexicon, if you're interested!

Writer's Block: Previously on My Journal

[Error: unknown template qotd]I know this is late but I went to watch The Official Secrets Act play instead of posting this. I feel it was a fair trade off!

So I have made a few new friends (if by 'made' you mean 'was friended by because I am a terrible wuss and fail at friending', and I do), so I thought this would be an opportune moment to fill you all in, and sneak in some extra stuff for those already in the know. Also, to me this seems like a question that could mean two things.

HI! Lets get to know each other better!

I go by the name of Lal round here, and sometimes IRL too. (Hi people-who-already-knew-that. I can't think of anything extra to put here, apart from that sometimes I am also the Maven of Cupcakes, which was news to me too!)

I study French and History -more on that here- at the University of Leeds. I should really be doing scary Final Year work instead of doing this. (and I am drowning in books and post-it notes.)

I live in a house at the end of a terrace with 3 other girls, Belle, Wren and Sal. They are charming and fabulous and put up with my absent-mindedness with great forebearance. (Also, sometimes we all sit around the table with tea and biscuits and talk about Narnia for hours on end.)

I have some too good to be true friends, but mostly they are a bit odd. I have a boyfriend called Nat, who has a grown up job and who lives to mock me. I have a slightly crazy family (you know, the type who people meet and go "Ah, I see, this explains a lot"), who are mostly in the Isle of Man or South Africa. Which are 2 of the places I grew up. (my crazyawesome Granny sent me a book about emoticons and an Aero bar today)

In regards to this journal, I have a Mission101, which I try and update every month, and I like to talk about books, languages, random things that happen to me, music and anything that takes my fancy. My most used tag is crazy conversations. I don't update everyday, but often. I often make bad jokes and literary references. Sometimes there are pictures of cake. (I think I am quite good at commenting and the like, no?)

Recently I won an Advanced Reader's Copy of Sarah Rees Brennan's- [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales - book. I love her blog and her writing and fangirl her madly. (And it came today!!!! With a really sweet message! I am throughly gripped and delighted already.) So you'd need to know that I will probably mention her too.

My fandoms are wide and varied, I write fanfiction occasionally, and I run a Sekrit Book Club, but mostly I lurk in corners and am generally delighted by people's creativity, involvement, silliness, insight and ability to bring the lulz. (that means you guys!)

If there's anything you would like to know, feel free to ask. Suggestions here.

The question is weird though, because to me it initially sounded like, if someone you already knew read this journal, what would they need to know?

Well, they would need to know that I have probably given them a pseudonym. That I love my lj, but no, I don't tell RL friends about it. This is mostly because it contains Things That I Have Written, which I neurotically cannot show to people face to face. I wouldn't have to tell them that I am weird, because that, they already know...

The line between RL and online stuff is a strange one, essentially. I might need to think more and post more later. What do you think? I would write more but I need to finish my ARC!

A Book Recommendation

This was meant to be recommendations for at least 2 books, but I got rather into just this one. More at a later date, I promise!

Well, everyone was so very nice and recommended books to me, and really, books are my main area of expertise, so here we are

Everyone in the world should read

1. Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale

What is it?
Well, it’s a sort of steampunk fantasy. Imagine Victorian London, only with a descendents of demons roaming about the place, and Priests as Police, the Captains of the Inquisition. Includes some Thrilling Heroics, a Terrible Crime, Hot Gay Romance and Men in Uniform. It’s also a lot less cheesy than I’ve just made it sound!

So, men in uniform you say?
Characters:
You basically get two books for the price of one, each one told from the POV of one of the main characters. The first is told in intimate, lyrical first person by Bellimai Sykes, a Prodigal, descended from the demons who quit Hell generations ago for salvation, and now, like most of his kind, he lives on the margins of society, though out of the Prodigal ghetto, Hell’s Below (formerly Hopetown. Yeah, that’s how well salvation went). I loved Bellimai, although I really shouldn’t. He’s a drug addict, hopelessly selfish and bitterly cynical. But, well, I love his cynicism. I loved the way he looked at the world, and his complete blindness to his better nature, the fact that he does the right thing, but will complain about it and flag up just how stupid it is.

The second book belongs to Captain William Harper, a priest in the service of the Inquisition (yes, you are right to be thinking Spanish style torture and fundamentalism. Not Monty Python), and is a more shadowed, nuanced third person affair, as befits his character. I loved Harper, even though I really shouldn’t. He’s repressed, secretive and hopelessly stubborn. But, well, I love his stubbornness. I loved how he never gave up on anyone, how he understood people and how he didn’t judge.

The Plot: William Harper’s sister has disappeared, in mysterious and rather dubious circumstances, so he hires Bellamai Sykes, rather more accustomed to the more dubious side of life, to help him find her. And that’s where the trouble really starts.

Why you might not want to read this book (you’d be mad, but I’m getting it out of the way)
Weeell, The Church (non specific btw) doesn’t come off great in this…

There is some man on man action, well man on demon…

Although it is focussed on a crime, this is not really a whodunit. More, we know whodunit, can we stop them getting away with it…

It’s, um, a bit short? There is an epilogue that, while excellent, I would have much rather have been several chapters more instead. I’d rather see everything get resolved than just hear that it had been.

Why you really, really should.
Did I mention the man on man action? Not super graphic but super, super sexy.

The way Ginn Hale writes. My god, that woman can do descriptive prose. Every time she started with “the night” I thought, ok, dazzle me again with your take on it, and she did, every time. Her writing is beautiful, effortlessly so. I don’t think there’s a word out of place. I weep with envy. But it is also real and very vivid in a ‘smell the shit and hear the screams’ kind of way. Which is a tricky combination to pull off.

The relationship between the two central characters. It is exactly the sort of relationship I love to see portrayed, and the sort that all too often isn’t. Both of our central characters are seriously damaged by their situations and their pasts. Neither of them are exactly the nicest or the easiest of people. I find that interesting and frankly quite refreshing, because, that’s what makes them so good together, they understand the other one because they know what it’s like to be damaged. I like to see relationships where people recognise that the other person has imperfections, and loves them, imperfect bits and all. When two people’s flaws complement each other, but also when they help each other turn parts that are broken into just flaws. Harper and Bellimai fulfil this and then some.

There’s also some seriously cool world building which, again, Ginn Hale makes seem easy and effortless. You get a handle on the society and its values really easily, and then there’s just loads of interesting and absorbing details about rooms and streets and clothes.

Essentially, its smart, its funny and its fascinating. If you’re looking for some characters to really get involved with, this is the book for you… There is so much dross out there people, we need to support the good books!

Go here to see order or read the first chapter, or both. Then read it. Then come back and I can rec some fanfic!

Wicked Gentlemen and cute creatures

Many Things!

Bloody hell, you guys, organising the Sekrit Book Club is both fraught and fabulous. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sorry, the First Rule of Sekrit Book Club is, Don't Talk About Sekrit Book Club. If you do, come on, join in!

Tangentally, the last time [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales  put up a cookie from her book I mentioned that it made me think of Alan teaching Nick with butter knives, which led [livejournal.com profile] disorderedmess  to draw this. Cute, n'est pas? Even though it kind of shouldn't be.

The cutest thing, however, has to be the companion for Princess Micie that [livejournal.com profile] cellophane_ria  drew especially for me!  Meet Miss Malin Mouse. She is just ADORABLE. I haven't had anything drawn for me in, well, ever. Many hearts and kudos for her <3.

Also, everyone in the world should go and read Wicked Gentlemen, by Ginn Hale. I have about half of a Review and Reasoning post done, so if you need more reasons you should have them soon. But trust me, its excellent.

I loved it, and wanted more of it, and so I wrote some fic for it, well, more of a drabble really. The book has an amazing style to it, which means that I am torn between feeling proud and worrying that it is horribly overdone and off the mark. I have never been so torn by something I've written! So please, for the sake of my sanity, tell me about it.

Its partly for Nat, who put up with me being the horrible stereotype of a writer and getting up at 2am to write some of this down. I am that cliché. I once wrote a scene on a napkin.

She is too fond of books and it has addled her brain...

Hey m'dears!

I hope you had a Christmas as awesome as you are (so, VERY).

I had a most delightful time. I have Beedle the Bard to get reading and then discuss with SQ peeps. I have had the [livejournal.com profile] thremedon LJ spotlight week of sheer EPICNESS to enjoy. I will still have time to read some more and maybe write some.

Also, I have the present of BOOK. Let me explain. A few weeks ago I related the following conversation to my Dad.

Wren: I have no idea how you have the time or money to buy books from Amazon.
Me: I'm a freaky speed reader. And I've worked it out, I can afford it if I don't go out at all for a week or two.
Nat: Seriously my love, you fail at being a Young Person. Books over going out, honestly...
Wren: Oh no, Lal would prioritise food over books if we didn't stop her and make her buy groceries.
Nat: So what you're saying is that my girlfriend isn't old before her time, but actually crazy.

So my Dad gave me an Amazon voucher saying "buy books with this and eat!"

So, Amazon vouchers to spend, and about a thousand ideas what to spend them on. So, I'm recruiting you guys!

What would you recommend? What book would you say "this. You must read this, you will Fall In Love with it..

If you are feeling particularily delightful, I would like 3 recs - 1. Fantasy 2. Gen Fiction 3. Non fiction.

And I would be more than happy to recommend books to you, because I am a hopeless Bookworm, Bibliophile, Fanatic and Bookaholic.
