2008 in pictures, part the first
Jan. 13th, 2009 12:20 amIn which there are many travels, much talking and the occasional castle...
This is a meme, which I am very late at doing, and which has to split into two parts because I cannot get some of the more recent photos off my camera. Foiled by technology, again. One picture plus explanation and 3 (sometimes cryptic) sentences to sum up each month.
Incidentally, I am giving paid LJ two months to seduce me. So far I am enjoying the iconage. Look, a bear hugging a flamingo! Micie gave it to me, isn't it the cutest thing. I must find more icons to fill up the yawning spaces in my list.
Anyway, here we go, 2008, January to June.
I started this year as I planned to go on, covered in gin.
To be honest I was glad to start a new year, because while some of 2007 had been amazing, some of it had been all kinds of crazy stressful difficult. And I knew that 2008 had a lot of good stuff just waiting to happen in it.
January
Freezing in France, first steps in fandom, first MacDs in years.
I also fought baggage restrictions, the cancellation of all trains west of Preston and my own ineptitude to be home for my loveliest Lil’s birthday, the only pictures of which are of my cleavage and my foot
. ( So here is... my foot )
February
Teasing relatives with fake boyfriends, browsing overpriced underwear shops with old ladies, yet more freezing.
I went back to Leeds to meet with my future-at-that-time-in-the-past housemates to look for a house for us all to live in. It was a trip that required planning of military precision and proportions, being as we had to get 4 girls from 4 countries (me from France, Sal from Belgium, Belle from Germany and Wren from Iceland) in Leeds at the same time. I saw 11 houses in 3 days, and we fell in love with just one, our House in the Hessles. This is the view from my window.( photo by Sal )
March
Stephen Fry as my England in a foreign land, arguing over possible twins on There Will Be Blood in 3 languages, discussing hopes with my pupils.
It was also the birthday of my Austrian madchen, Carina, who gets no nickname because her name is too awesome, carino mio. We had a party, drank a lot of Kir Royales and then the next day tried to show our visitors around town until we all collapsed in a heap on the bench by the river. Carina is awake, I am asleep, Petra could be either and Martina is so snoring...
( and we all clearly need some sun! )
April
Visitors to break umbrellas and go to the seaside with, Jonhannesburg like a place from a novel, no longer a cousin but temporary sister.
Arg, it was hard to pick this month, because I had lots of visitors and also went to South Africa to see my family. But, to sum up, it was my birthday. The visitors came partly for that, and the trip was a present. 21! Go me! To celebrate Belle, Sal and I made castle cakes, chateaux gateaux, for me and Sal, seeing as she turned 22 the day before. Aren’t they amazing?
( mmm, strawberry ramparts... )
May
So, to Normany, Brittany and Bordeaux with Austrian lovelies. To York, Lincoln, Oxford and Iceland to visit old friends. And then home.
May was manic. The highlight was absolutely going to see Wren in Iceland. We hired the tiniest car in all the world and drove to what felt like the top of it. Every view was otherworldly and breathtaking.

June
Fun in the sun at the TT races, dullsleepdull, singing in Salzburg, beer in Barvaria.
Not much happened in June, until I went to Munich with Sal to visit Belle. It was amazing, and we talked so much that Belle lost her voice. As an extra bonus, the weather was gorgeous. Look how sunny it is in the Olympic Park!

More soon, when I figure out why my camera hates me... What were your highlights of 2008? Cryptic sentences explained on request...
