HI LAL, I FEEL THAT IT HAS BEEN SO LONG SINCE LAST WE SPOKE!
(A little drama for your afternoon, there.)
Re: workplace friends/workmates - I think I'm lucky in that I've inherited enough of my Dad's 'get along with people' ability that I fit in okay. Work-me is not the same as home-me, however, which is halfway between work-me and internets-me.
I have a strong group of friends elsewhere on the nets, that I've known since, Gods, 2002. We have a Camping Meet every year and I love them dearly. We're a pretty seamless group - plenty of things in common but enough not in common to make things interesting.
What I'm getting at with this rambling is more of a - I know what you mean! sort of thing. There's only been a couple of people, over the years I've worked there, that I've actually considered friends at work. The others I've put up with, internally.
(Luckily for me I'm a curiosity to most of my workmates - 'cos I'm fairly certain they've never met anyone like me before with my open fannishness and geekiness and oddness.)
